Preparing For Preliminary Reviews

Two Steps to Help Your Student Through the Process

Preliminary academic certification reviews are typically attempted for student-athletes using coursework the student-athlete completed during grades/years 9-11. However, a "prelim" may be attempted earlier depending on when transcripts are received and/or when a student is activated to (listed on) an NCAA Division I or II school's institutional request list. There are two steps you can take to assist your students with this process.

1. Upload Sixth Semester Transcripts

To help prepare students for a preliminary certification review, visit the High School Portal to upload sixth semester transcripts for your senior student-athletes who have been activated to an institutional request list. Please work with these students to review their preliminary academic certifications and ensure that they are enrolled in core-courses that meet Division I or II initial-eligibility requirements. Additionally, please review your high school’s Eligibility Center account for open tasks and review your high school’s NCAA-approved core-course list for any updates.

2. Review Information in Preliminary Certification Task
To provide greater clarity on what student-athletes need to meet the Eligibility Center’s initial-eligibility requirements, a new task has been added for student accounts. This new task, titled “Division I/II Preliminary Academic Decision Available,” will be assigned to a student’s account after a preliminary academic decision has been made.

The task information includes an overview of the requirements the student has and has not yet met, providing them with clear guidance on their current status. Click here for a sample of this task. Students are encouraged to share this information with their family and high school counselor. Thank you to our member and high school advisory groups for their input on this new task.

Submission of Academic Documents COVID-19 Policy Expires April 30, 2024

As a reminder, official academic records are required for initial-eligibility certifications. If only unofficial records are available for students who initially enroll full time in the 2023-24 academic year, they may be submitted to ec-processing@ncaa.org directly from the email address associated with the student’s Eligibility Center account and should include the student’s NCAA ID in the subject line.
Note: This policy will expire as of April 30, 2024. Starting May 1, 2024, official academic records will be required and must be submitted via an approved channel for domestic and international students.
