Understanding NCAA Academic Standards

For Student-Athletes Considering Divisions I and II

Are your student-athletes ready to compete? It takes more than talent on the field! The NCAA Eligibility Center calculates your athletes' core-course grade-point average based only on the grades they earn in NCAA-approved core courses.
» Division I requires a minimum 2.3 GPA.
» Division II requires a minimum 2.2 GPA.
Your student-athletes must complete a total of 16 NCAA-approved core-courses in order to be eligible to play their sport at the collegiate level. There are different core-course requirements for the Division I and II levels. Click here for a resource you can share with your students to help make sure they are on track with these core-course requirements.
Is your student-athlete being recruited by a Division I school? To study and compete at a Division I school, your student-athletes must complete 10 of their 16 core courses (including seven in English, math or science) before the start of their seventh semester. (International student-athletes don't have this requirement.

Jordan McNair Foundation
This foundation was founded by Tonya Wilson and Martin "Marty" McNair in honor of their son Jordan McNair, a University of Maryland offensive lineman who passed away from heatstroke.
A large focus of this foundation is to educate coaches and parents and promote awareness on the signs and symptoms of heatstroke and heart-related illnesses. Click here to learn more about the foundation and what you can do to protect your student-athletes from heatstroke. Sport Science Institute: Skin Safety

Sport Science Institute
High school counselors, coaches and athletics administrators play a critical role in educating student-athletes about skin safety. Making student-athletes aware of the risks can help them keep their skin healthy and safe.
In order to support your efforts to educate student-athletes about skin safety, the Sport Science Institute developed a number of downloadable educational resources. Resources are available on many different sports. Be sure to share these resources with your athletes and their family.
