Did You Know: What's a Matriculation Letter?

When working with your recruits, you may need to submit a matriculation letter to the NCAA Eligibility Center. A matriculation letter is a specific Eligibility Center online form (accessible via the Membership Portal) used by NCAA compliance offices to confirm the date when a recruit initially enrolled full-time in a college or university (anywhere in the world). For Division III, this date of initial full-time enrollment may be required to certify the amateur status of your recruits. The Eligibility Center requests this information via a task, located in the student’s Task List area of their EC account. Please monitor closely for this task (titled “Enrollment Verification Document Needed”) to determine if the EC needs this information. (Other amateurism-related tasks may also be assigned.)

Once the requested matriculation letter is received, the document is typically reviewed within 24-48 business hours. The task will be marked complete once the document is reviewed by staff.
  • Who submits the requested matriculation letter? Staff at the NCAA Division I, II or III college or university recruiting the student-athlete submits this document. (Two-year colleges or any other college or institution cannot provide this to the NCAA Eligibility Center on behalf of the student.)
  • Who on our staff can submit a matriculation letter? Matriculation letters may be submitted by any staff member listed on a member school’s EC Contact List, provided they attest to the accuracy of the information provided.
  • How does our staff submit a matriculation letter? To access the new online matriculation letter, log in to the Membership Portal and click on the Resources tab. The Matriculation Form link is located in the Eligibility Center Forms section of the right-hand column. You can also access the electronic matriculation form by hovering over the Resources tab and selecting “Matriculation Form” from the available dropdown.
From there, use the student-athlete NCAA ID to locate the account for which you want to submit a matriculation date, then click Submit. On the screen shown, (1) enter the matriculation date, (2) declare whether the initial institution of full-time enrollment is an NCAA school (and if so, select the member school from the field), and (3) enter your contact information. After reviewing and checking the affirmation box, click Submit Request (located at the bottom of the page). An on-screen notice confirms your submission.

NCAA Sports Wagering Education

New Module Provides Direction for Student-Athletes

Earlier this month, the NCAA launched its first sports wagering e-learning module designed to further educate more than 500,000 current and college-bound student-athletes on problem gambling’s harms and the risks sports wagering poses to the integrity of their games. Following feedback from student-athletes and campus leaders, the NCAA engaged former college athletes, including an NFL player, to better connect with current student-athletes. Topics covered also include NCAA rules and social media harassment.

Zaire Franklin, Indianapolis Colts NFL linebacker and former Syracuse football student-athlete and finance/marketing management graduate, kicks off the learning experience, followed by Mikala Hall, who played basketball and earned a Master of Business Administration from Central Michigan, and Joshua Butler, who played football and earned an MBA from Sioux Falls.

The module is a free, interactive tool that immerses the learner in an educational experience with helpful information, scenarios, Q&As and resources, all delivered by former student-athletes, for student-athletes. Every student-athlete registered with the Eligibility Center will be tasked to complete this module via their Eligibility Center account.
