DIVISION III PRESIDENTS QUARTERLY UPDATE - AUGUST 2025
MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR, PRESIDENT JIM TROHA
I am Jim Troha, president of Juniata College and chair of the NCAA Division III Presidents Council. As the 2025-26 academic year commences, I extend my best wishes for a productive and inspiring start to the year. This edition of the quarterly newsletter includes key updates and actions from the August 2025 Presidents Council meeting. I encourage you to review these items and engage in thoughtful dialogue with your campus and conference leaders including presidents/chancellors, athletics direct reports, directors of athletics, and conference commissioners as we collectively advance the mission and values of Division III.
CHAMPIONSHIP PER DIEM INCREASE
The council approved an increase in the championships per diem for Division III institutions, effective in the 2025-26 and 2026-27 academic years. Teams traveling to NCAA championships will receive $150 per day, while host teams will receive $60. This decision reflects rising costs across campuses and supports the over 80% of Division III institutions that have participated in NCAA championships over the last three years.
STRATEGIC PLAN
The Council approved the implementation strategy for year two of Division III’s strategic plan, which aligns with the second year of the current budget biennium. In addition, 2025-26 will serve as a budget planning year as the division prepares the next biennium budget for 2026-28.
PRESIDENTS COUNCIL FUTURES SUBCOMMITTEE
The Council received an update from its Futures Subcommittee and discussed several key strategic priorities. These included continued financial reviews and monitoring potential impacts of the recent House injunction, the importance of sustained Congressional engagement to address unresolved legal threats and maintaining membership stability amidst institutional pressures and expanding conference footprints. The council also reaffirmed it branding and marketing efforts as a membership priority highlighting the success of live streaming all team championships last year. It also expressed strong support for expanding the NCAA Purchasing Cooperative to include additional items such as balls and uniforms.
2026 CONVENTION
The council reviewed the current slate of proposals for the 2026 NCAA Convention. The governance structure is currently sponsoring eight proposals and the membership, to date, is sponsoring eight proposals. During its October meeting, the council will identify which proposals should be presidential. The 2026 NCAA Convention will take place January 13-16 in Washington, D.C. and includes a Division III Presidents and Chancellors Forum scheduled for Wednesday, Jan. 14, the Division III Issues Forum on Jan. 15, and the Business Session on Jan. 16.
