The NCAA Division III staff has created this bi-weekly communication for the Division III membership to provide up-to-date communications on recent Division III governance meeting discussions and outcomes. Please share this communication with your campus and conference colleagues.
Recent Governance Meetings - Key Discussions and Outcomes.
Division III Congressional Advocates, June 2 Toolkit. The advocates reviewed the recently released toolkit, the ask of Division III presidents and chancellors and noted the recent distribution of a feedback form. The advocates noted that the talking points in the toolkit are a guide for engagement and not a mandate.
Philosophy Statement Working Group, June 5 Philosophy Statement feedback. The working group reviewed a summary of the membership feedback solicited in May and used that feedback to revise a proposed philosophy statement to present to the Strategic Planning and Finance Committee during its late June meeting.
Diversity and Inclusion Working Group, June 6 Train the trainer program. The working group discussed the information gathered by the consultants via a membership survey and focus groups.
LGBTQ Working Group, June 8 Athletics communication resource. The working group provided feedback on a new draft resource to assist athletics communication and sports information departments with LGBTQ inclusion. The goal is to distribute the new resource in August.
Upcoming Meetings and Anticipated Discussions.
Interpretations and Legislation Committee, June 15 Legislative process. The committee will continue its review of the Division III legislative process. The focus of its discussion has been to review opportunities to increase membership participation and collaboration.
Championships Committee, June 20-21 Budget enhancement priorities survey. The committee will review an initial analysis of the budget priorities survey results completed by conference commissioners and directors of athletics to gauge the membership’s championships budget priorities leading into the next budget cycle (FY25).
Selection criteria database. The committee will continue to discuss selection criteria (e.g., Pairwise) and the progress made on its timeline to educate and seek feedback from sport committees and affiliate groups.
Sport committee reports. The committee will discuss several sport committee reports including football (proposed bracket expansion), women’s ice hockey (seeking to establish predetermined host sites every other year; similar format to men’s ice hockey), and men’s and women’s soccer (championships date formula).
Strategic Planning and Finance Committee, June 22 Philosophy Statement. The committee will review the membership’s feedback from a May survey and the working group’s recommendations. It is anticipated SPFC will finalize a recommendation to the Management and Presidents Councils to sponsor 2024 convention legislation to amend the philosophy statement. If approved by the councils, during their summer meetings, the membership will vote on an amended Philosophy Statement during the 2024 NCAA Convention.
Strategic Plan. The committee will review this year’s strategic plan and forward a recommendation to the councils regarding the 2023-24 strategic priorities.
Budget. The committee will review the current budget to actuals, act on a recommendation to reinstitute programming for athletics direct reports, discuss the planned evaluation of the Enrichment Fund and receive an update from the Financial and Risk Management Working Group.
With every communication, we also anticipate additional questions. Please send all questions to DIIIGovernance@ncaa.org. Thank you for your continued collaboration and leadership.
