Athletic Training Stakeholder Meeting – Report Available

The report from the June 2023 athletic training stakeholder meeting to discuss issues related to the collegiate workforce is available for NCAA membership review.

In recent months, the NCAA membership has demonstrated increased interest in the collegiate athletic training workforce and the implications of perceived shortages in that workforce for the National Collegiate Athletic Association. The NCAA Committee on Competitive Safeguards and Medical Aspects of Sports has been monitoring this issue and has routinely engaged with leaders in the athletic training profession to understand the issue more fully.

As part of its continued efforts, CSMAS, working with NCAA Sport Science Institute staff, co-lead a meeting with industry and membership stakeholders in athletic training in June 2023. Meeting participants included representatives from the National Athletic Trainers’ Association, the Board of Certification, the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education and from each of the three NCAA divisions. The meeting was held on June 21 in conjunction with the annual meeting of the National Athletic Trainers’ Association in Indianapolis, Indiana and was hosted by the NATA.

The purpose of the meeting was to share information and discuss the collegiate athletic training workforce and related issues of interest and concern to the NCAA membership. Specifically, the meeting addressed the following issues:
  • The workforce implications of athletic training credentialing and credential holders.
  • The workforce implications of athletic training education.
  • The state of the athletic training collegiate workforce and other medical and industry workforces.
  • Ideas for addressing athletic training collegiate workforce issues.
CSMAS is expected to discuss the implications of this meeting and the ideas for addressing athletic training collegiate workforce issues during its fall meeting, scheduled for September 19-20.

Membership questions about the meeting or the report can be directed to the SSI at ssi@ncaa.org.
